Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal program established to make oral health care more affordable for eligible Canadian residents. It aims to remove financial barriers to accessing essential dental services—from preventive care to more specialized treatments—for those who meet the criteria set by the Government of Canada.

At Dentistes Cité Rosemont, we accept and facilitate the use of the CDCP when the patient is eligible. We assist you in verifying your coverage, understanding what is covered, and incorporating these benefits into your treatment plan.

What is the CDCP?

The RCSD (sometimes called the Canadian Dental Care Plan) is a public program that helps make essential dental care more affordable for eligible residents of Canada. It is a federal government initiative aimed at reducing the costs associated with dental services, particularly for middle-income families, children, seniors, and other eligible groups.

The program covers a variety of essential oral health services—including preventive, diagnostic, restorative care, and certain procedures—subject to current policies and terms.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the CDCP, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be a Canadian resident for tax purposes;
  • Have filed your tax return for the previous year;
  • Not have access to private dental insurance (through employment, a pension plan, family insurance, etc.);
  • Meet other specific program requirements, as defined by the government.

Adjusted net family income is used to determine eligibility, and your eligibility may be reviewed annually to ensure you continue to meet the plan’s criteria.

How to Apply

Applications for the CDCP can be submitted online or through the My Service Canada Account portal, where you can:

  • Create an account or log in to your existing account;
  • Click on the Canadian Dental Plan section;
  • Follow the instructions to submit your application.

The required information includes your Social Insurance Number (SIN), date of birth, contact information, and details about any previous or current government dental coverage.

It is important to renew your coverage annually to maintain your eligibility without interruption.

Coverage and Services

The CDCP may cover some or all of the costs of certain essential dental services. Depending on program policies (which are subject to updates by the government), these may include:

  • Preventive care (exams, cleanings, fluoride);
  • Diagnostics and X-rays;
  • Restorative care (such as fillings);
  • Certain oral surgical procedures;
  • Periodontal care (gum disease);
  • Certain prosthetic and orthodontic treatments, subject to conditions;

It is important to note, however, that not all services are automatically covered. Some services may require prior authorization, and others may not be included. The amount reimbursed depends on the program’s fee schedules and current policy.

How does the CDCP work?

If you are eligible for the CDCP and have been approved by the government, you will receive confirmation of your coverage. This confirmation can be verified by your dental care provider via electronic tools or the Sun Life Direct portal (the plan administrator).

Before undergoing treatment under the CDCP, it is recommended that your dentist confirm your coverage and verify which services and amounts are covered to avoid surprises. As a participant, we can submit CDCP claims for eligible services.

Helpful Tips

Check your eligibility online before scheduling an appointment under the CDCP.
Make sure your tax records are up to date, as eligibility is often based on your previous tax return.
Ask your dentist what services may be covered before planning major treatment.
Keep your eligibility documents and follow the annual renewal steps.
