Post-operative Care Guidelines
After certain dental procedures, it is normal to experience mild discomfort or to need to follow specific instructions to promote proper healing. At Dentistes Cité Rosemont, we take the time to explain the recommendations tailored to each situation and remain available if you have any questions after your appointment.
Instructions may vary depending on the treatment received. Below are general guidelines for the most common treatments.

After Surgical Procedures (Extractions and Grafts)
Surgical procedures such as tooth extractions or gum grafts require special care in the days following treatment.
In the first 24 hours:
- Keep the compress in place as directed, generally for the first few hours following the procedure;
- Avoid rinsing your mouth vigorously;
- Avoid spitting out liquids or using a straw (which may dislodge the blood clot essential for healing);
- Limit strenuous physical activity;
- Apply ice to the outside of the cheek in 10- to 15-minute intervals per hour.
In the days following:
- Stick to a soft, lukewarm diet
- Avoid hard, crunchy, very hot, or spicy foods;
- Brush your teeth gently, avoiding the treated area;
- Take the prescribed medication as directed;
- Avoid tobacco and alcoholic beverages, which delay healing.
Mild bleeding or moderate swelling is normal at first. However, if the pain increases, if significant bleeding persists, or if unusual swelling occurs, it is important to contact the clinic.

After a Root Canal Treatment
A root canal treats the inside of an infected or inflamed tooth. After the appointment, you may experience temporary sensitivity, especially when chewing.
Here are some recommendations:
- Avoid chewing on the treated side until the final restoration is complete;
- Take the pain relievers recommended or prescribed by your dentist as needed, always following the dosage instructions;
- Maintain good oral hygiene;
- Keep your scheduled appointment for the final restoration (a dental crown to strengthen the treated tooth).
Mild to moderate sensitivity for a few days is normal. However, if the pain becomes severe or persists beyond a few days, it is best to contact us.

After Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening can cause temporary sensitivity, which usually subsides within a few days.
Within 24 to 48 hours after treatment:
- Avoid colored foods and beverages (coffee, tea, red wine, tomato sauce, etc.);
- Avoid tobacco;
- Use toothpaste for sensitive teeth;
- Maintain gentle and regular oral hygiene.
Sensitivity is usually temporary. If it becomes severe or persists, please let us know so we can advise you.
After the Placement of a Restoration (crown, bridge, implant restoration)
After the placement of a crown, bridge, or implant restoration, a period of adjustment may be necessary.
It is recommended that you:
- Avoid eating until the effects of the anesthesia have worn off;
- Avoid very hard foods during the first few hours;
- Maintain rigorous oral hygiene;
- Use dental floss carefully around the restorations.
You may experience slight sensitivity or a different sensation when biting down. This sensation usually goes away quickly. If you feel that your bite is uncomfortable or that the restoration seems too high, it is important to contact us for an adjustment.

When should you contact the clinic?
Contact us if you experience:
- Significant pain that is persistent or worsens after 48 hours;
- Excessive bleeding or bleeding that does not stop with the use of sterile compresses;
- Significant swelling;
- Fever;
- Any concerns regarding your symptoms and recovery.
